Tomorrow, (23rd July), sees the commencement of the 23rd Commonwealth Games, this year being held in Glasgow.
Around 3000, athletes will be taking part, from 74 nations and territories across the Commonwealth.
The event, which is traditionally held every four years, was first established in 1930, and many greats throughout the world of sport have locked horns over a number of differing activities.
In the sport of athletics, one big name shines out like a big beacon in Morpeth, is Jim Alder, who indeed triumphed by taking Gold in the Marathon of 1966, in Kingston, Jamaica, representing Scotland, the country he was born.
That year, Jim also sensationally took Bronze in the old six-mile race, now more known as the 10,000metres.
This year, on Tuesday 28th July, currently scheduled at 20.35, another Morpeth Harrier will attempt to win a medal in the 10,000m, and that is Scott Beattie, who although currently based in London, after spending a period in America to further his academic life, is still very highly regarded by the North East, and his club, having turned out in some of their Championship challenges.
Another Morpeth Harriers member participating at the eleven-day event is the clubs Technical Official Hemant Desai, who will be on daily duty to help keep things in order for the competing athletes.
Like Scott, it is indeed a great honour to be chosen in any capacity to be present at such a high-profile event.
